In September 2019, we purchased a 1,200 sq ft two bed, two bath condo in Destin Florida and have since put an additional $10,000 into renovations and updates. It is located on the Holiday Isle peninsula, which is only a few miles in length bordered by the Destin harbor on the north and the Gulf of Mexico on the south. The condo is three short blocks from the gulf and our complex has the longest linear footage of harbor waterfront on Holiday Isle. We have three boat docks, a pool, pickle / tennis court, waterfront clubhouse, BBQ grills, bike racks, and kayak / SUP racks. Our condo has storage on the patio and a storage closet at the end of the hall.
October 2020 Update: for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the market we’ve decided to sell. Here’s our listing.
The Kitchen
We spent nearly half our budget in the kitchen alone. Taking down the cabinets, that hung over the stove, was a game-changer. Then removing the massive hanging light and drywall feature, really opened the kitchen up to the rest of the main living area. We had the backsplash redone by a great local company, Destin Elite Tile. We also installed a touch-free faucet and replaced every cabinet hinge as they were all broken. And of course, replacing the nearly 20-year old appliances (except the stove) really updated the kitchen.
The Living Room
The living room renovation consisted of simple cosmetic updates. Removing the dated “beachy” themed furniture and replacing it with neutral updated colors as well as mounting the tv onto the wall, made the space brighter and more open to the amazing patio and views.
The Patio
The patio furniture we chose is made in the USA from recycled plastics with stainless steel hardware and has a 20-year warranty. We chose cocktail height to ensure you can see over the railing while seated. We have a sunrise view and love sitting there and watching the boats, birds, and dolphins in the harbor!
The Guest Bed & Bath
The guest room and bath were also, really simple cosmetic updates. Getting rid of the bunk bed, which had had the top removed, updating the furniture, and putting in a full size washer is all that was done. Installing a dryer vent and dryer will be the next updates. In the meantime, a coin operated washer and dryer are just steps down the hall on our floor.
The Master Bed & Bath
The master bed and bath needed major updates, all new furniture, blinds, curtains, art, etc. We left if very simple and now the room feels quite large with plenty of closet space.
We’ve enjoyed updating the condo, as it mostly just needed some TLC, in the form of repairs and serious deep cleaning. There will always be more to do, more to repair or replace but for now we are ‘finished’ and enjoying our beach life here in Florida. This spot is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, beach bums and nature lovers alike.
Great job showing the before and after images. You two have made significant changes that add value to your property.
